Between 1880 and 1924, more than four million Italians crossed the Atlantic carrying little beyond a single phrase: pane e lavoro, bread and work. America’s Italian-American Story traces that community from Filippo Mazzei and the founding era to Ellis Island, two world wars, and the entrepreneurs, artists, and public servants who shaped modern America, told honestly, the good and the hard.
Woven through it is one family’s story across five generations: a grandfather who dreamed of buying back the family’s land in Italy, and a father who served in World War II with Patton’s Third Army. Written to mark America’s 250th anniversary.
